HEAT NOTICE – The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Wise County and much of northern Texas from noon today and until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Hot temperatures and high humidity will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those who work or participate in outdoor activities. Today’s high temperature at Decatur is expected to be around 98 degrees with heat index values ​​as high as 107.

DELTA CAUSING SURGE IN CASES – Wise County is considered to be at a “very high” risk level for the spread of COVID-19, said Dr Jon Walker, Wise County Medical Health Authority. Active cases of COVID-19 jumped to 187 on Thursday, according to the State Department of Health Services (DSHS), an increase of 33 in just two days. As of Sunday, the number was 182. “There has been a sharp increase in the number of active cases in Wise County in recent weeks,” Walker said. “This increase appears to be at a faster pace than the previous increase last fall.” Walker said last week that he believed the Delta variant was the predominant COVID virus in the region and that those infected might be at higher risk for hospitalization. On Thursday, 19 COVID-positive patents were hospitalized at the Wise Health System. Walker said unvaccinated people are most at risk of contracting COVID-19. BACK TO SCHOOL – The students of Decatur ISD will return to class on Tuesday. According to a letter sent to parents on Friday, students will not be required to wear masks, but they are not prohibited from wearing one. If a student exhibits symptoms of COVID-19, parents will be contacted. Only students who test positive should be quarantined.

COVID RELIEF FUND AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS – A third round of funding is available for Weatherford College students who have experienced economic hardship due to COVID-19. WC has received more than $ 10 million under the third round of Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) student aid. About half of those funds are for incurred colleges, COVID-related expenses, and $ 5,261,403 is specifically for student aid. Full-time students, those currently enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours for the semester, are eligible for up to $ 2,000 in CARES III funds. Part-time students are eligible for prorated scholarships. COMMISSIONERS TO DISCUSS BUDGET AND TAX RATE – Wise County Commissioners will discuss the proposed budget and tax rate for fiscal year 2021-2022 during their meeting at 9 a.m. this morning at the courthouse.

DECATUR BUDGET, TAX RATE ON THE AGENDA – The Decatur city council will discuss the draft budget for the 2021-2022 fiscal year this evening and propose a tax rate before setting a public hearing on the points. The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the town hall and will be followed by a workshop to discuss possible bond projects.

FUNERAL – Service for Norma Jean Spunaugle Nies, 90, of Decatur is at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Decatur First Baptist Church with interment in Oaklawn Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 tonight at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

Funeral for Betty anderson, 95, of Bridgeport is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Bridgeport with interment at East Bridgeport Cemetery. Open visitation is 6-8 tonight at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
