Rex Foundation Pledges $1.5 Million in Grants to New Orleans Schools and Mentorship Programs to Honor 150th Anniversary
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) — To honor Rex’s 150th birthday, the organization’s charitable arm announced Saturday, February 19, its commitment to donate $1.5 million in grants to support schools, educational programs and New Orleans Mentoring Center before the current school year comes to an end.
Officials from Rex’s Pro Bono Publico Foundation made the announcement at the Rex Den and said $1 million of the targeted amount had already been distributed to 78 beneficiaries. The remaining grant commitment will be dispersed before school holidays for the summer, the organization said.
This year marks the seventh consecutive year that the foundation has provided at least $1 million in grants, Rex said in a statement.
The foundation has funded more than $10.3 million in grants over the past 15 grant cycles, primarily in the form of operating grants “which support the important work being done in our schools,” the statement said. “These grants provide school leaders with additional funds to do what they otherwise could not do.”
Merritt Lane, Foundation Board Member, said, “Donors to the Pro Bono Publico Foundation, as well as other local foundations we partner with, recognize the importance of this investment in our children and our future. We have made tremendous progress, but we recognize that there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure excellence in all of our schools.
