PROVIDENCE, RI (AP) – Rhode Island’s community service programs will receive $ 1.1 million in federal funding.

The Rhode Island congressional delegation said Friday that the ServeRI programs will receive the money through the American Rescue Plan Act. The goal is to strengthen national service in Rhode Island and to support organizations and communities disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

The money will be spent to increase living allowances for AmeriCorps members, stabilize Rhode Island’s AmeriCorps programs, and expand ServeRI’s opportunities over the next three years.

ServeRI, which is administered by the state’s education department, awards AmeriCorps grants, promotes residents’ commitment to public service, and seeks to organize the collective effort for volunteer and service opportunities across the ‘State.

“From education to conservation, this federal funding will help AmeriCorps members in Rhode Island meet significant challenges and make a positive difference,” said US Senator Jack Reed, a Democrat from Rhode Island, in a statement. communicated.

U.S. Representative Jim Langevin, also a Democrat from Rhode Island, said as the state recovers from the pandemic, these organizations must have the resources to continue serving communities.
