2013 Will Garrett joins Men’s Lacrosse coaching staff

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach, Gene McCabeannounced the hiring of Will Garrett ’13 to the coaching staff for the 2023 season. Garrett will begin his appointment as assistant coach Sept. 1.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Will back to Lexington,” said W&L Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Gene McCabe. “He is an accomplished and skilled coach who is passionate about W&L, the game of lacrosse and player development. It is especially special for me to coach with someone I recruited who has played here at W&L .”

Garrett returns to Lexington after serving the previous two seasons as head coach at Benedictine College. He led the team to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Tournament in both seasons, while helping the Ravens win the 2022 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) championship. Garrett’s 2021 team finished the season as the NAIA national leader in shots per game and shots on goal per game, while second in turnovers per game.

“It’s hard to describe how excited I am to return to W&L as an assistant coach,” Garrett said. “My family has a history with the university, the lacrosse tradition runs deep, and now I can contribute to the future success of the program. I want to thank Coach McCabe and Athletic Director Michael F. Walsh John Hathorn for the opportunity to return to such a reputable academic institution and lacrosse program. I look forward to meeting and working with what I already know to be a very impressive group of young men.”

Since 2014, Garrett has owned 5 Corner Sports, where he was the head varsity lacrosse coach at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, Kan. While coaching the Shawnee Mission East lacrosse team, Garrett helped guide the team to state championship titles in 2016, 2018, and 2019. Garrett was also named LAKC Coach of the Year in 2019.

After graduating from W&L in 2013, Garrett also gained experience as a Blue Lion Lacrosse Club owner and coach, financial advisor for Morgan Stanley, and applications analyst at Cerner Corporation.

Garrett received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in Finance, from W&L in 2013, while earning four letters on the men’s lacrosse team as a midfielder. He made 48 appearances in his four years and had 22 points on 15 goals and seven assists.

Garrett is also a 2020 graduate of the University of Kansas Data Analytics Bootcamp.
