Audio Visual Research Centre, University of
Roorkee now Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EM2RC),
IIT Roorkee Campus, Roorkee was established in 1983 at the country's
premier Engineering University of Roorkee by the University Grants
Commission on the recommendations of the Task-Force on Mass
Communication and Educational Technology. IIT Roorkee has a most
favorable environment for academic pursuit, research and development
activities. Its own infrastructure and intellectual capital is greatly
augmented by other sister institutes located in the town particularly
the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), National Institute of
Hydrology (NIH), Irrigation Research Institute (IRI) and the Bengal
Engineer Group & Centre (BEG). Not only this many other institutes of
national repute like Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, National
Institute for Visually Handicapped, Media Council of Forestry Research
& Education, Dehradoon are situated quite close to this place.

EM2RC Roorkee
is one of the 17 media centres. Its major objective is to produce
Educational Television programs of high quality for higher education
and mass communication which can provide new insights, bring in new
findings and take the viewers on vicarious tours of places and
laboratories they would never see. The centre has produced 472
educational programs on various subjects namely; Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics, Life Science, Nutrition, Earth Sciences, Architecture,
Ecology, Applied Science, Photography, Literature, Medical Sciences,
Civil Engineering, Art, Social Sciences, Tourism, Agriculture,
Environment, Science & Technology, Pollution, Health, History &
Culture, Home Science, Forestry, History, Human Rights, Fine Arts,
Hydrology, Career Counseling, Oceanography, Women Empowerment,
Engineering, Yoga, Geology, Geography etc. of these many programs have
been dubbed into Hindi. The programs produced by the centre are
telecast under Countrywide Classroom program on DD-1, GD-4 and
24 hours non-stop transmission on a separate Vyas channel
of higher education. Keeping in view the development in the
technology, a major initiative has been taken by the UGC to develop
e-Content and make it available to teachers and students for face to
face and self-paced learning. With the result, all 17 media centres of
the country are renamed as Educational Multimedia Research Centre, so
the AVRC Roorkee has also been renamed as Educational Multimedia
Research Centre. Now our centre has been provided with basic platform
and e-technology for e-content development. This will help and enable
teachers to use this facility to develop educational programs in their
subject. Besides this; the UGC CWCR program is entered into
interactive virtual classroom teaching after launching the educational
satellite (EDUSAT).

provides a forum for the active involvement of academics and other
scholars in creation of appropriate educational programs. To prepare
high quality technical programs in the area of engineering and related
fields by using best expertise of the country as this centre is
privileged to be situated in India’s premier technical institution. |
