COUNTRY WIDE CLASSROOM
PROGRAMMES

THE
GENESIS
With the
intent of overcoming some of these obstacles to knowledge and
learning, the University Grants Commission initiated a unique
Educational Television Experiment. Operationalisation of the Indian
National Satellite (INSAT) series and the National TV Network in 1982,
provided students with a ringside seat to view the latest developments
in any field. UGC began its transmission of Countrywide Classroom (CWCR)
from 15th August, 1984. Telecast twice a day for the past
twelve years through Doordarshan's National Network, CWCR has created
a niche audience of youth and adults in cities, small towns and remote
areas devoid of adequate educational facilities
CWCR
& THE MEDIA CENTRES

Countrywide
Classroom (CWCR) programme production is guided by CEC as a nodal body
of University Grants Commission (UGC). These educational programmes
are produced by 17 media centres under the CEC and are telecast on
Doordarshan’s National Channel (DD I) everyday. These programmes could
be used either to supplement curriculum or as enrichment material.
They seek to provide knowledge that broadens horizons by giving
information on various subjects. These are available in topics as
mentioned below. The hyperlink lead to details/ list of programmes in

The produce
quality programmes indigenously and on sustained basis for CWCR, the
UGC set up Media Centers in premier universities of India. The
academicians of the various departments of universities and scientists
working in laboratories were invited to share their knowledge with the
nation on the Indian television network. From four media Centers in
1984, the number has grown to Seventeen.
These centers till 2004, were known as Educational Media Research
Centers (EMRCs) and Audio Visual Research Centers (AVRCs).These are
located in various parts of the country.Keeping in view the new
challenges for packaging the knowledge in multimedia format these
centers have since been renamed as Educational Multimedia Research
Centers (EMMRC) in 2004 by the UGC.
